The Joy and Freedom of Asana
A Workshop Series with Susan Richardson

"When an asana is done correctly, the body movements are smooth, there is lightness in the body and freedom in the mind."
~ BKS Iyengar

Iyengar Hatha Yoga is based on the teachings of B.K.S. Iyengar, a living Indian Yoga Master. Mr. Iyengar is one of the premier Yogis responsible for introducing yoga to the West. He has done more than anyone ever has in perfecting the science of yoga and in increasing its therapeutic application. His approach is characterized by the innovative use of props (which he designed himself) to make the poses available to everyone regardless of their limitations. His vigorous approach also involves meticulous attention to detail and precision in performing postures thereby maximizing their safety and therapeutic value.

About the Teacher:
Susan Richardson is a certified teacher of Iyengar yoga. She has studied intensively with many senior teachers since 1996, as well as studying with Geeta Iyengar, daughter of B.K.S. Iyengar. She brings to her teaching a deep fascination with anatomy, and a calm compassion for the challenges that yoga brings to the student.

Workshop Schedule:

Sunday April 2: From Earth to Sky The physical body is the gateway to our understanding of the increasingly more subtle aspects of our existence. Through asana practice we are able to integrate body and mind and move towards a balanced, blissful state of harmony and wholeness. In this workshop we will explore the underlying principles of Standing Postures which develops an intelligent foundation for all other asanas, creating a safe therapeutic, and fluid yoga practice .

Sunday April 9: From Outer to Inner - Twisting postures are powerful asanas to energize and vitalize the body. They massage and tone the internal organs, and promote the health of the endocrine and circulatory systems. In this workshop we will look at standing and sitting twists as well as inverted twists and explore the different effects they have on the internal body .

Sunday April 23: Moving Water to Fire - Backbending postures open the heart and stimulate circulation in the whole spinal column. They are a powerful medicine to achieve emotional balance. In this workshop we will explore the components and sequence of a backbend practice and experience the exhilaration and vitality they generate.

Sunday April 30: Exploring Air and Space - Inversions allow us to shift the effects of gravity on blood flow, the organic body and the spine. Through this practice we will use support to facilitate longer holdings in inversions and prepare our bodies for the practice of pranayama (breath) .
